Haan, Main Savitribai Phule
The story of an extraordinary woman, Savitribai Phule

‘Haan, Main Savitribai Phule’ is based on the life and work of the educationist Savitribai Phule. This powerful solo play is written, directed and performed by Sushama Deshpande. In this play, Sushama brings Savitri to the present day; Savitri appears to be genuinely puzzled – “Why are things so much the same after 100 years? Why have you not taken the movement forward?”

This is the Hindi version of the play, originally written in Marathi as ‘Vhay, Mee Savitribai’ (‘Yes, I am Savitribai’). The play charts the journey of Savitri’s life, telling her story from her perspective. Sushama Deshpande has been performing it for 25 years, and has done more than 3000 performances in different parts of India as well as in many countries like USA, China, and so on. The play has travelled far and wide in the interiors of Maharashtra and other places in India, a majority of the performances have been presented at the grass-root level in villages and slums of towns and cities of India.
