Theatre of the Oppressed Workshop Shame and gender power relations 18 February 2012 at Visthar, Bangalore Theatre Of The Oppressed (TOTO), developed by the Brazilian Augusto Boal, is aimed at analysing and transforming social reality using the transformative power of theatre. In TOTO everybody is considered an actor. The method enables us to enter in dialogue with our bodies to critically analyse social reality and try out possible transformations. TOTO seeks to provide tools which helps the subject to move from a passive subject or just a spectator to an active transformative subject. It is an aesthetical sensual method consisting of exercises, games and theatre techniques, which have the effect of a physical as well as intellectual "de-mechanisation" of perceptions and actions. In this workshop we will focus on how unequal gender relations adhere to the emotion of shame, using mainly techniques of the Image Theatre. The workshop is aimed at women who work in the realm of gender justice and are interested to learn a new methodological approach or just are interested to critically dialogue and reflect about gender in a creative way. The workshop will be facilitated by Archana Krishnamurthy, a political scientist from Germany. Archana has been practicing Theatre of the Oppressed for the last 5 years in different international post- conflict contexts (Central America, Colombia and Caucasia), with a special focus on gender issues. She is part of the gender and peace department of the Paulo Freire Institute Berlin (PFI) and has worked with several women's theatre groups in Buenos Aires and Berlin. Currently she is doing her PhD on the relationship of shame and gender power relations from a postcolonial perspective.
